![]() He started pimping at 18, and plied his trade until he was 42, adopting the moniker "Iceberg Slim" along the way. Robert was a tall, lithe youth (he kept his good looks into late middle age, despite a fondness for cocaine, heroin and whisky), and women were drawn to him - a certain type of woman in particular. As a teenager in the mid 30s, Robert briefly attended the Tuskegee Institute, at the same time as Ralph Ellison, the author of Invisible Man, though the two moved in different circles, each oblivious to the presence of the other. He later - somewhat uncharitably - credited her with having prepared him for the pimp lifestyle by pampering him during his childhood. His father left, and his mother supported the family by working as a domestic and running a beauty shop. Much of his childhood was spent in Milwaukee's poor North Side and the industrial town of Rockford, Illinois - consistently ranked as one of America's most blighted cities - before he returned to Chicago as a teenager. Iceberg Slim, or Robert Beck as he would become, was born Robert Lee Maupin, in Chicago on 4 August 1918. So I hunted down the rest of his fiction. After reading Trick Baby, I was sure Iceberg Slim was a writer with a mission, rather than just an entertaining street raconteur. Any real writer should be able to speak truth to power, and do it entertainingly. ![]() I found a tatty old copy of Trick Baby in another shop it had long been out of print in the UK. Later I learned that Slim had produced novels, too. How could you not pick up a book called Pimp written by a guy named Iceberg Slim? The narrative had wit, verve, rage and humour. I picked up his autobiography, Pimp: The Story of My Life, in a secondhand bookshop in Soho. But wherever I travelled, a more surprising writer - a Chicagoan called Iceberg Slim - remained one of my biggest influences. And then I looked further afield, to Beckett and Tolstoy and so on. Then I looked further back, to James Hogg, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Robert Burns. Kelman's insistence on an authentic voice was particularly liberating. James Kelman and Alasdair Gray, in their different ways, took McIlvanney's approach to a new level. He wrote about people I could identify with, and they were the central characters, the stars of the show, not token villains or comedians. William McIlvanney, the author of Laidlaw and other books set in Glasgow, was a revelation. To get past this means that invisible barriers have to be broken down: I found the inspiration to do that under my nose, in Scotland. This, of course, was nonsense, and I can see now that I was looking for reasons to fail, as one does when failure is the cultural expectation. So Waugh was inspirational, but he was also prohibitive - he confirmed that you had to be posh and wealthy to be a writer. The Ernest Hemingway and Jack London cult of the macho writer pretty much passed me by: I thought them all very well for the wild frontier lands of America, but writers in Britain were supposed to be like Evelyn Waugh. Waugh - who conjured worlds so different from my background - became, and remains, one of my favourite writers. My own writer's journey probably started with Evelyn Waugh, via my Uncle Jack, a fireman, who was taking an Open University degree course. Often not brilliant books, but none the less they circulated. In small, systems-built flats there is scant room for bookcases, so in the housing scheme where I grew up, books were passed around. Like many people from a "non-bookish culture" I was probably always a writer, but I didn't know how to become one.

Visit our Products Page for more information. You likely already know the role sunscreen plays in your skin care routine. Keeping track of your sun exposure, and reapplying sunscreen as often as needed depending on how long you are outdoors, is your first line of defense against UV radiation. ![]() Don’t forget to apply enough sunscreen to cover all exposed areas, especially those often overlooked such as the back of the neck, ears, neck and décolleté, which are particularly susceptible to sun damage. It’s important to remember that sunscreen is an excellent addition to your everyday skincare ritual-even on overcast and cold days because the sun’s rays are still present. As manufacturers respond to recent research, you’ll notice that the latest products being released in the sun protection category are being formulated with powerful antioxidants. Think about choosing a sun protection product that also contains a good dose of antioxidants to fight those very nasty free radicals that age our skin. ![]() The sunscreens are also used to counteract the negative photo-aging effects of free radicals (from daylight) on the skin. Ideally, the product will be fragrance-free, as this prevents photo-aging fromĬhemical exposure. Ultraviolet rays can also cause hyperpigmentation (year round), so wearing sun protection can dramatically reduce the incidence of skin discoloration. While physical sunblock - which contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide - may be messier to apply, it offers the best year-round protection. They are also less irritating than chemical blockers. Additionally, physical blockers work for a longer period of time giving longer coverage, requiring less re-application. Physical sunscreens deflect or block the sun’s rays, whereas chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays. Physical sunscreens provide better broad-spectrum coverage as compared to chemical-based sunscreens which are usually either UVB or UVA blockers. While all physical UV filters block from both UVA and UVB rays, most chemical UV filters protect one or the other, not both. Over time, some chemical filters slowly break down and release heat. Chemical sunscreens use active ingredients that absorb UV radiation, preventing them from penetrating the skin. Physical sunscreens use UV filters that reflect, scatter and block the sun’s rays. Wearing a sunscreen whenever exposed to daylight is just a small way that we can boost our body’s defense against the ravages of UV radiation.Ĭonsider physical sunscreen (as opposed to chemical sunscreen). With our current knowledge of the potentially damaging effects of UV rays, it should be unthinkable to leave the skin exposed to the elements. Both UVA and UVB rays are linked with skin cancer and long-term harm for your health.īroad spectrum sunscreens protect us from UVA rays, the aging rays of the sun, and therefore they can honestly claim to “aid in the prevention of premature aging. UVB rays cause tanning and burning on the upper layers of the skin. UVA rays penetrate the layers of the skin, causing most premature aging. The sun’s harmful rays are just as strong and damaging despite what your thermometer says - particularly the UVA rays which are responsible for aging skin. There are two types of UV rays that breach the ozone layer and cause damage to the skin: UVA rays and UVB rays. PHYSICAL SUNSCREENĭon’t be misled by the dropping temperatures. Since the people who get hit by the hero’s special move are still alive and moving, but about to experience a horrible death no matter what they do, the もう let’s them know something about themselves that they have not yet realized. I’ll go over those details in the next section, but for now let’s focus on that “You don’t even know” part that isn’t explicitly stated in the Japanese dialog.īasically speaking, it comes back to that that もう from earlier which is used to express a change in state. In this case, the phrase is used by the protagonist of the anime when he uses a special move on the bad guys, and they are “dead men walking,” so to speak. The thing about it is that the Japanese language relies pretty heavily on context to explain certain things. Sometimes you will see that English translation of this phrase as “You don’t even know that you are already dead” instead of the one that I’ve explained above.Īnd the cool thing is that this too is correct! Let’s talk about this next thing: An Alternative Interpretation of the Phrase Anyway, that covers all of the individual words that make up the phrase. You know how a person is “in the state of a run” when they are “running”? It’s kind of like that. 死んでいる doesn’t mean “dying” so much as it means “you are in the state of being dead.” This is one situation where a literal translation into English falls short of the true Japanese meaning. Here’s the thing about this last word: 死ぬ is literally the the verb for “to die” and here it’s in its te-form of 死んで combined with the iru-verb いる which functions like the -ing ending in English. Hence, the usage of もう in the sentence.įinally, we have 死んでいる (shinde iru) which means someone is “dead” in English. In this case, the other person was in the state of being alive, but now they are in the state of being dead. Simply put, the word もう is used when something was in one state of being, but is now in a different state of being. Then we get もう (mou) which gets translated as “already” here, but actually has some interesting connotations in the Japanese language. The particle は (wa) follows next, and really just lets us know who the topic of the sentence is. ![]() That being said, it makes perfect sense why it’s used in anime when talking to one’s enemy. In other words, you probably shouldn’t use this when talking to a real person. Since this word is pretty rough, it is really only ever used by men in shows, or by women that have that “rough edge” to their personality. It is a lot more common to use the other person’s last name when speaking Japanese, in place of the pronoun “you” but anime tends to break this rule of decency and instead use お前. ![]() Now the first word used is お前 (omae) which is kind of a vulgar way to say “you” in Japanese. ![]() The phrase omae wa mou shindeiru is spelled in Japanese as:Īnd in English it means “You are already dead.” Then I’ll dive into each word so that you can see the individual pieces that are used to construct this iconic saying.įinally, I’d like to touch on an alternate English translation that sometimes gets used, and the reasoning behind it. ![]() 5) What do You Think? What Does the Phrase Mean?Īlright, so what I would like to do first is give the phrase in its entirety (in Japanese) along with the common English translation. ![]() fell 4.51 percent to close at NT$222.50, and rival Wistron Corp. This was prompted by the work of Oswald Avery at Rockefeller Institute in New York. It would not be until the mid 20th century that attitudes towards DNA began to change. In part this was because they had a more complex structure, being made up of 20 different amino acids. Proteins were instead thought to be the carriers of genetic material. By 1901 he determined it to be made up of five nitrogen bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), thymine (T) and uracil (U).įor many decades DNA remained little studied because it was assumed to be an inert substance incapable of carrying genetic material because of its simple structure. Following this, he began working out its chemical composition. In 1881 Albrecht Kossel, a German biochemist, renamed Miescher's compound deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) based on the fact that he had discovered it to be a nucleic acid. He lacked sufficient communication skills, however, to convey the importance of what he had found to the wider scientific world. While possessing only simple tools and methods, by 1874 Miescher had come close to working out the genetic role of nuclein. On investigating further he discovered nuclein to be present in many other tissues. Believing the substance to originate from the nuceli of the cell, Miescher nicknamed it 'nuclein'. The compound bore no resemblance to any known protein. On looking through the microscope he observed that a substance separated from the solution of the cells whenever he added an acid and then dissolved again once alkali was added. This he did while working in the laboratory of Felix Hoppe-Seyler in Tubingen, Germany as part of project to determine the chemical building blocks of cells. The discovery of DNA stretches back to 1869, when Friedrich Miescher, a Swiss physician and biologist, began examining leucocytes, a type of white blood cell, he had sourced from pus collected on fresh surgical bandages. Within agriculture DNA is also used to help improve animal livestock and plants. It is also critical to the identification of pathogens.Īside from its medical uses, the fact that DNA is unique to each individual makes it a vital forensic tool identifying criminals, the remains of a missing person, and determining the biological parent of a child. Understanding the structure and function of DNA has helped revolutionise the investigation of disease pathways, assess an individual’s genetic susceptibility to specific diseases, diagnose genetic disorders, and formulate new drugs. ![]() Credit: Alfons Renz.ĭNA is central to biotechnology and medicine by virtue of the fact that it not only provides the basic blueprint for all life, it is a fundamental determinant of how the body functions and the disease process. This is pretty bad here, You get 100 credits for a win and 50 for a lose, then 500 credits every 5 levels (which after the first 15 or so levels it takes a long time to gain 5 levels). Overwatch was pretty decent too, usually you could get a loot crate after 3 to 4 games. Yeah Halo 5 really nailed it in terms of cosmetic micro transactions. I thought Halo 5's reward rate was pretty good in comparison. That's still quite a lot of grinding just to buy cosmetic items and bounties. If you win a match, you get maybe 70-100 or so. But say if you're constantly losing in a vs MP match, you maybe get about 30-40 credits. I think they've even upped it a bit, and they also lowered the price for an elite pack to 3500 credits. Yeah, even the vs MP sessions reward with such little credits. I don't mind this strategy for free-to-play games or even cheap games, but when you're dropping $100 up front on a game don't nickel-and-dime users afterward too. Classic example of a game company trying to push micro-transactions to get players to buy coins with real dollars. A good game of Horde can take 2-3 hours and you not rewarded with enough coins for such a long grind. My only complaint is the reward rate for "coins" to spend on upgrades is way too low. I have played Horde a little bit and may even keep the game around to play multi-player after completing the campaign (which is something I've never done before). I completed the campaign last night and quite liked it.
